“Brown Eyed Girl” by Van Morrison appears on his first solo studio album, Blowin’ Your Mind (1967).
The song was originally titled “Brown Skinned Girl”, but the record label, Bang Records, insisted Morrison change the title and the wording. Morrison explained, “After we’d recorded it, I looked at the tape box and didn’t even notice that I’d changed the title. I looked at the box where I’d lain it down with my guitar and it said ‘Brown Eyed Girl’ on the tape box. It’s just one of those things that happen.”
Because of the contract he signed with Bang Records (without legal advice), Morrison never received any royalties for writing or recording this song. The contract made him liable for all recording expenses incurred for all his Bang Records recordings before any royalties would be paid. Fortunately for Morrison, this song, together with his work with the band, Them, gave him enough momentum to receive studio time for his breakthrough album, Astral Weeks.
By 2011 the song had received over 10 million hours of radio air play. It is interesting that this is the most well known of Morrison’s songs because Morrison himself was quoted in saying that it was a “throwaway song” and that he has written “three hundred songs that are better.”
Fuck him. He’s a racist anti vax far right fuck head.
