Hey everyone, a while ago I made [this post] (https://kbin.social/m/linux/t/108370/Help-me-find-a-fitting-distro) asking for recommandations of distros. After some considerable thinking I went ahead and chose EndeavourOS (with Gnome) due to wanting an experience as close to Arch as possible but having some handholding at the installation process.

I also chose to dual boot Windows11 for some games that can’t be run on Linux (looking at you Valorant). Anyway, here are the impressions of the first 2 days of daily driving EndeavourOS:

Pros:

  • right of the bat I had better driver support than on W11, namely I could connect directly to WiFi, without having to plug the Ethernet in, download and install the WiFi driver and then connect to WiFi.
  • very pleasant GUI installer
  • fantastic look and feel, it’s been a while since I’ve enjoyed exploring a piece of software this much
  • the amount of customization: it was a blast theming everything with rose-pine
  • better performance while gaming: admittedly, I don’t game much besides League of Legends/CSGO, but I got much better performance on League than when I was on W11 (this is due to a strange bug on W11 that made LoL not run on the dedicated GPU no matter what I tried)

Cons:

  • for now I can’t consider anything as a downside as I think it’s too early to make a distinction between my incompetence and the OS’s limitations.

Fuck ups:

  • first time when I installed EndeavourOS I didn’t select grub as the bootloader, so I was like ??? when I didn’t get to select the booting OS
  • I can’t quite select a good font-size for Firefox. It’s either too small, or everything too big
  • not knowing how to properly set the theme so I at some point had the same theme, but in different flavors across different apps
  • I installed Bing Wallpaper extension for Gnome but I couldn’t configure it to only change the lockscreen image (this was one of my favorite W11 things), if any of you could help, I’d greatly appreciate

That’s it for now, I’ll come back with an update after I get to fiddle around with Endeavour a bit more.

    Bing Wallpaper extension for Gnome

    This is the most cursed word sequence I have read this month. My oppinions aside. Glad you like it so far. I would recommend looking things up on the archwiki pretty much regardless of the distro.

        Unironic, I had the idea of using Edge, mainly because on W11 it was running better than Firefox. Thought decided to give Firefox another go and see if I’m satisfied.

          I actually do install it on computers for kids, to use the Microsoft child-account parental controls.

    New in Linux and chose an Arch-based distro. Brave. Jk. I hope you enjoy your stay with EOS. You’re gonna love the aur and wiki. Also, get timeshift.

    Just one question (actually 2, but eh): are you on desktop or laptop? What made you choose Gnome (if you’re on desktop)?

      Laptop, kind of a must have because of University. I preferred Gnome as it was a mature DE I could’ve left untouched theoretically. Although that was not the case :D

    I’m in the same boot. Wrapping up my first week of dual booting (for me it’s KDE via Debian 12).

    With Firefox, I encountered the same issue. After adjusting the resolution scaling, it is back to normal/expected, so give that a shot if your distro allows it.

        No idea how it translates. My desktop is running KDE w/ fractional scaling so my screen is like 116.5% or something funky like that

    Not knowing how to properly set the theme is a fuck-up? Was it explained and you just ignored it, or was it not explained?

      Not really a fuck up but couldn’t come up with a better category. I mostly searched everything by myself.

    Curious - how did you get League to work? It’s been years since I’ve attempted to play it on Linux, and it’s always been janky at best, or not work at all.

      Just followed the tutorial from leagueoflinux + killed the client process after the initial download, restarted and worked like a charm. It’s a bit laggy in champ select but in game it works well.

        I’ll have to try that out after work today, if I can get league to work flawlessly on Linux I’ll scarcely have a reason to sideboot Windows anymore

          League definitely works, I am playing it on my main PC (running Arch) and on my Steam Deck.

          There have been quite a few upgrades to the Wine version and the script, you should now be able to get it running just fine using the standard Lutris script with maybe some additional steps from /r/leagueoflinux wiki (can’t remember exactly anymore, been a while since I installed it)

          Of course, still expect standard League client bugs, but other than that it works perfectly!
