I recently had the realization that I’ve just been putting up with Windows bullshit forever recently when a friend asked me for help with their work PC. They’re a Mac user, but they just started working from home and have been provided a Windows laptop. They sent me a bunch of rushed texts when their headset stopped working. They changed the default audio device after they launched the program. Which never works on a Windows PC. I never have that problem because I have just learned to live with it, I don’t even think about it anymore.

Now I’m really starting to notice all the little things I put up with from Windows on my machine. To be fair my Linux machine is just as janky but at least I can say I made it that way. I keep telling myself to ‘tidy’ my Linux machine up but I never do, it still plays games just fine. Usually. If I didn’t fuck with it.

While true, it requires time and money to get a case before the court. Which most people don’t have. If your rights require you to invest your time and money against a much larger adversarial party in court, then it’s not your rights that are being protected in the first place. Right now Big Tech is more worried about us exercising our rights instead of being afraid of trampling on them in the first place.

This might have been acceptable 20 years ago but it’s not a strong enough policy today. Data theft happens all the time and it’s in the interests of a company who’s security has been breached to not tell you that your data has been taken. You should assume that at anytime someone has several examples of your login credentials, not just one. You should use a password manager that isn’t Chrome, Firefox, Safari, ect.

I think people underestimate how good those self-service photo booths are or that they print more than photos. It’ll print whatever you tell them so as long as it can open the file.

Imo, obtaining, distributing and consuming pirated IP is a grey area. Selling pirated IP is not okay. Interwebs pirates should share, not sell.

I have to explain to my aunt how to navigate to her external hard drive every time she plugs it in to see or save her pictures. That’s with autoplay. Asking her to click on a script I set up to mount it and click the shortcut to that mount point. No way, it would take 45 minutes on the phone every time. I’m telling her to buy the extended support, cause I’m not going through upgrading her computer again. As long as that malware riddled cesspool stays exactly the same she can use it. Some people are just very bad with technology.

Might be recoverable if you had a live distro ready. Otherwise, o7.

Thank you for your recommendation. I’ve looked at some of those SoCs and they’re impressive but none of them do what I’m looking for. I want to make a graveyard for my old GPUs, but without the power overhead I have right now with them configured as essentially a mining rig that’s folding proteins instead of guessing the hash. I understand that the potential power saved by using ARM or RISC over x86/64 is a few dozen watts at best and chosing an SoC over a desktop platform hamstrings any opportunity for scaling, but it’s been a dream project of mine for quite some time. It doesn’t have to be practical.

Whenever I am doing different projects I go with RasPi alternatives. I agree they’re cheaper and superior.

Is there a RasPi alternative that’s competitive in price and has PCI-e support? It’s been a dream project of mine for quite some time to pair an ultra low power SoC to a GPU in order to make a crazy overpowered Folding@Home or BOINC cluster.

I think people misunderstand this and that you explained it well. It wasn’t a court that struck down the video, it was YouTube. I’m not sure though what American law has to say about monolithic platforms like YouTube and hosting public domain content.

Conditioning a behavior is basic psych101. It’s a controlled external stimulus which illicits a desirable action from the subject. So a conditioned consumer is subject to external stimulie which illicits them to spend. I wouldn’t blame the subject here, I’d blame the one doing the conditioning.

Regardless of all that, you are right but so wrong. We are all to blame, but I mean corporations and us. Politicians and the oligarchs aren’t responsible for what you or I do. What they are responsible for is manipulating systems to benefit themselves over the interests of the general public.

Since politicians and the business elite wield so much influence that makes them more responsible than you or I who really can’t make a big difference on our own. You’re blaming the proletariat for being the proletariat, but we don’t choose whether or not we are. You can work as hard as you can your entire life and you’ll never amount to the level of power and influence Elon, Jeff, Mark, Bill, or Steve had/have.

Honestly, some people I know are just fish in a barrel compared to some of these mobile game ads. I used to think it was a character flaw, and for most it is. For them I don’t have much sympathy. For a small few, those dopamine casinos are irresistible. It’s a compulsion to play, just like a gambling addiction. These are “The Whales” mobile game companies talk about. They’re the fish in a barrel.

So this is my setup, and it’s pretty cost effective. I have two 2Tb HDDs that are striped and one 500Gb SSD that’s alone. The games I play the most live on my SSD, any games I’m not really playing live on the HDD. Then I just move my games from one to another. I didn’t even have the second HDD for the longest time. I don’t bother with using the SSD as a cache anymore. There is no advantage in gameplay to striping a game, however updates and moves are faster.

A warning about Framework, they’re on the bleeding edge of modular laptop design (not hardware). So while they may shift laptop design entirely, the bleeding edge always cuts. I don’t know anyone with a Framework laptop and if you’re the first person you know IRL to have one be prepared for unexpected issues. I really hope the idea takes off but I don’t envy the first adopters.

I’ve been casually transitioning to kubernetes and zsh, but I’m just too comfortable with bash and my os running on bare metal. (He says with more than half his apps switched to containers.) It’s simple, effective, and is always available. I should take the plunge, someday.

I made the switch to Mint (and Windows) a while ago, but I still use Ubuntu for stupid little IOT projects. I should probably learn how to build my own with Yocto, maybe that’ll be a future project. BalenaOS is great for quick a dirty stuff but Balena collects A LOT of telemetry from your system and it’s only a matter of time until they sell that data or lose it in a breach. It’s hard to give up what I’m comfortable with sometimes.
