I got an invite to join last year and signed up to test it out.
Felt like there was a lot less people and a lot less content on it than Mastadon.
Unless the users/content now really starts to take off, there’s not enough on there to make it interesting.
Some forums are still reasonably active. I use Whirlpool fairly regularly. Mostly tech related, but has lots of other sections too.

Yeah, it seems to work now. Didn’t used to work reliably a few years ago. Now, text within any document I save seems to come up in search shortly afterwards.
It’s things like this that make me glad that my email service defaults to not loading any images/links/html. There’s a small button at the top to load them if I want.

Yes, they are less prevalent due to Reddit and other social media sucking up a lot of the users.
They are still around though. One Australian forum that I’ve been on for years which is still very active is Whirlpool. Started as a tech forum and expanded. It’s very useful as source of info as it’s been around over 20 years and a lot of questions have been asked and answered there.

I have been with idrive since 2009. At the time they were the only ones that allowed backups of network attached storage on their cheaper personal plans. Everyone else saw that as an “enterprise” feature which required a business plan. Which was bullsh*t, because lots of home NAS devices were being sold.
Anyway, I haven’t done a recent comparison of services, but I remain happy with idrive.
Thesedays I no longer backup on a computer with a mapped drive, but directly from my NAS which runs the idrive software.
I had a catastrophic dual drive failure a few years ago, one failed and another failed during the raid rebuild! I was able to restore about 1tb of data and didn’t lose anything important.
They also offer backup and restore by shipping a drive to you if you want to avoid the huge initial backup or a total restore, but I haven’t used that feature.
They do also have a mobile app, but last time I tried it, it wasn’t great.
Yeah, I’m only keeping it because of the grandfathered deal. If they scrap that I’ll just cancel and save the money. Better in my pocket than Google’s!

Yeah, that’s what I use for close to 100% of my payments since about 2020.
I guess losing your phone or running out of battery are the limitations with that. Not often a problem admittedly.
My starting assumption is that almost everything I read online is either misrepresented or totally untrue.
If I don’t recognise the source I assume there’s a high chance it’s bullshit. If I recognise the source well, I still assume there’s a chance it could be inaccurate.

According to AdGuard it’s blocked around 2,500 trackers and 24,000 requests just in the last 24hrs. Every app must be constantly connecting - staggering!
One other important thought to add to my own comment.
If I’m moving to a web based service, longevity is important. Nothing lasts forever, but if I move to another solution and migrate everything and they go out of business in 6 mths, that would suck. So it matters that where I move to is fairly solid and sustainable.
That’s why I hoped that Evernote would keep going, they charged a reasonable amount for the service.
But I guess in the commercial world it’s all about constant growth rather than sustainability…

I’ve thought about migrating for the last couple of years, but just left it as I couldn’t be bothered.
If it’s getting more expensive though, this might be the time to move.
What would be the service with the easiest migration path? Ideally one that:
has good automatic OCR of all documents uploaded to make them searchable
has good apps on Android, Windows and IOS
has a good import function that can retain tags from Evernote
That may be asking too much?
Have never had a Facebook account. Have never had an Instagram account. No, I’m not about to sign up to Threads.
I do have WhatsApp, it’s the main messaging app that everyone I know uses, so I don’t have much choice.
