The air is plenty clean as it is
Tell that to the people in East Palestine Ohio. Tell that to the people that live near coal plants.
as long as you don’t live in California
Doesn’t matter where you live if the planet is uninhabitable.
Wanting to breath clean air on a habitable planet isn’t insanity.
It’ll look like what we already have. Swaths of users self hosting, with lots of redundancy to deal woth instances that have problems.
And that might mean it needs to stay small, but that’s OK. Not all success is measured in popularity.

Don’t federate with corps, it will only end badly
I will say, part of that ignorance, apathy, and laziness is an intentional part of our existing society. You can’t spend the time to research every single product you ever buy, because many are stuck working several job, basically everyone is juggling their work, family, and social life.
A couple months back, I tried putting some effort into finding a printer that had all of the qualifications I wanted.
usb printing, no network needed
laser
color
not a brand that will fuck you over (looking at you HP)
within a reasonable budget of $300-$400
And such a product just doesn’t exist. Brother comes close, but the market straight up isn’t producing good things. So at the end of the day all I can do is either get shafted at the local print store, or suck it up and get an inferior product.
But going back to the OP, it’s so much worse with cars because we have a car-centric society. You NEED a car in this place to have a normal life. Our cities and transportation have been intentionally designed to fuck over everyone not in a car.
So there is inelastic demand. The manufacturers can do whatever the fuck they want and get away with it.
Enshitification isn’t solved by voting with your dollar. If it did, the printer market wouldn’t be the shit show that it is. You can’t vote for the good if all the manufacturers mutually agree to only produce shit. Only regulation will keep them in line.
(inb4 “brother is better”, I am aware that brother printers are generally better, but they are far from good.)
The issue generally isn’t ads, it’s the frequency, targeted nature/data mining, and how invasive they are.
The more shitty it is to use your site, the more people use ad block. This is a problem youtube is complicit in.
And most people aren’t using 4k to begin with.
How’s the gaming support on debian?
What I am saying is, I don’t think people who use duolingo are any better/worse off than most other methods.
I think that would go for most learning methods. When you don’t practice a skill you’re always going to get worse with it over time, especially if it is a language.
Doable but you need teachers to open source their lessons and vet them.
If an OS alternative was trying to completely replace duolingo, it would need far more than that. Duolingo has had extensive work put into listening and speaking lessons. Almost all lessons have a listening componentwhich is a ton of content to make up for. They have significantly better voice recognition than my phone. The amount of effort to get something like that working for a language, let alone dozens of languages is a high bar.
Take a look at any of the job postings that duolingo has, they’re only looking for Google employee level of skill for a reason (aside from how fucked the job market is).
It’s not impossible for duolingo to be replaced with an open source version, but it’s a giant undertaking.
They actually get the opposite, support from their party. Because if you’re the minority party and you’re able to kill legislation that the majority party wants, it’s seen as a victory.
You can’t wait out an indefinite filibuster. And it gets to become indefinite because they don’t actually need to talk at all.
You cloture the person
And that essentially isn’t an option at times due to how difficult it is to reach the 60 vote threshold, which means nothing gets done, which means congress is basically useless.
Agreed. It’s just a disaster all around honestly. It can change, but it’s not easy.
That’s how it used to work, not anymore:

A filibuster raises the vote threshold, so it’s not something you can just wait out. And thank to how the filibusterer works nowadays, congressmen don’t actually need to get up there and talk, they can merely threaten to filibuster to raise the vote threshold.

Go for it. It was already an old, long dead meme when I posted it here.
