I create things.
@spacecowboy Yeah they are just numbers on a screen, I know when I go to comments if a comment has more upvotes than down I know it is most likely a good source / answer compared to the ones with hundreds of downvotes.
@Haywire That sucks, I think the Fediverse was made-for-discussion. What good is it without communication and community?
@Molecular0079 I will probably use SSDs for my working storage (As it helps to have speed) but when it comes to Cold Storage / Long Term Storage due to the price of an SSD compared to an HDD I think it would be easier HDD as well as there’s some statistic I saw before about how HDDs last longer than SSDs, this might have changed in recent years but unless SSDs get cheaper per TB than HDDs I’ll have to probably use a mix for speed and size.
@Reborn2966 I think so from the 3 seconds I looked at it, I just don’t really want to use a Syncing method for anything as it complicates things as well as commonly does charge and I don’t really have spare cash for it…
@Molecular0079 I’ll keep that in mind, I hope to more use them for Cold Storage Purposes for my old Video Edits. I hope to create a NAS in the future what I will most likely pay out for these more Pricy drives that are made for 24/7 use.
@WeirdGoesPro Thanks, yeah I’m a video editor so I go through a lot of media files and will always need to call back to previous work this is why I need such large Drives as the average joe doesn’t really use more than 1TB as I can easily fill that up with only a few Projects. I have an old PC that I put Ubuntu on a year or so back to try out Linux, Personally have to use Windows due to using the Adobe Suite but if I can have my files stored on there and move/access them from my other PC that would be amazing.
Luckily I will be able to test the theory of this out shortly as I will have access to my home office soon with it almost finished being decorated, can’t wait to see what I can do and will probably put some updates on this Community.
@Reborn2966 I’m not using Rsync, I’m just using Sync a program/site under sync.com it was alright but the price does not justify what I was using it for and I’d much rather just pay for USB Hard Drives and maybe even build a NAS in the future.
@WeirdGoesPro Yeah it’s one of the reasons I hope to self-host, I’d rather know what my data is being used for but also it will be cheaper in the long run. I will have to look into the drive things you where saying about as I don’t know how to self-host on a NAS and really would love to move to a NAS in the future.
@astrionic I did actually make this point in point number 2. The Brands & people they like to interact with haven’t jumped ship either.
This is where Threads is a good example of why it needs to federalize as it actually does have a lot of Brands & people on there and if it did, it would be able to interact with Mastodon as well as the rest of the Fediverse. As well as in my point number 1. They want to go where the majority of people are.
Some people are like sheep and go with the flock, if a big company or influencer moved over to Mastodon or any part of the Fediverse they might actually move across themselves, even if they crosspost it’s a good start allowing people to move away from TwitterX if they wish to. But yes the Fediverse has fewer people & brands of the moment but in due time people will mostly get fed-up with being toyed around by these centralized platforms.
@JelloBrains Yes you are right, mastodon doesn’t have the ‘normal’ feed they are used to. I like the explanation that it’s like a Garden, you have to pick the weeds but the things you grow are much sweeter in the end.
@realcaseyrollins I feel as if people are only sticking with the platform because of a few reasons.
There’s probably more other reasons and would love to know your thoughts about what I feel is some of the reasons people don’t want to leave X or Twitter, What ever you want to call it.
@chakan2 I know most of us are now Ex-Users
@sab It’s also about Quality, currently a lot of PeerTube Instances make you have a limit on how much space you have, if you self-host you can raise that limit to the amount of space you have. Most people who don’t create quality content might not last and possibly would just shut down their servers removing their content from the Fediverse.
But those who get donations and any other form of revenue would be able to keep going and even expand their storage if they need to allow their content to be a bigger part of the Fediverse.
Let’s take PewDiePie for instance, if he moved all his videos over to the Fediverse it would be only PewDiePie’s videos across the whole Fediverse but because of his money behind him, he can host them. Merch, Donations, and any other sponsorship could keep him running the server for another month, especially if someone already has or builds up a community of people that are willing to spend money on them.
@housepanther Yeah I think it will most likely be on a Tip based system unless people can work out something better for the Fediverse. It’s not that bad if it does become a Tip based system as long as people are willing to spend a little on the creators they enjoy sometimes.
@i_cant_sports I’ve tried using WSL before but I seem to not be able to boot up into the Distro from clicking on the Linux WSL application after it appeared, I still might give it another go and see if it will run this time, thank you.
@a@kbin.social Thank you, I knew that you could change your Desktop I just didn’t know how easy it would be to change it. But I will have to give it a good go and maybe use Linux Mint as heard some good things about it.
@Zeppo The goal would be to use Linux as my base OS in the future. As I look through the many comments from everyone I am now re-evaluating some of the things I feel I ‘Need’ in my set up such as my Sync Cloud Storage, Instead I hope to move over to External Hard Drives.
Knowing Adobe is a huge part of my setup does hurt the idea of moving to Linux at the moment but I will have to find if there is a workaround other than VMs in the future. People mentioned GPU Passthrough on the VM which would help a lot, It’s just not only learning how to run a VM but how to do the pass-through on it.
But yes I do wish to move to Linux in the future but maybe baby testing the Distos I think I might like on a VM might be the best way to step into this rather than going into the deep end straight away.
@Minty95 The Second-Hand NAS is a good idea, I’ve already stuffed about 5 hard drives into my already small case for my PC so NAS might be a good option.
That’s fair enough, especially if the Fediverse grow to the point of Social Media becoming non-existent (Other Than as a Social Network such as the Fediverse is)
