A lot of car parks are becoming like this. It’s especially frustrating when you try to download the app but you have no signal and there’s no other way to pay.

And it’s a behaviour that stems from the admins who’ll ban users from the entire instance if they disagree with their opinions.

It’s the only instance I have blocked at my account level so I don’t see their communties.

They won’t care or won’t even notice these things. They’ll open their laptop, book a holday or find some new car insurance or write a report of whatever and not even think about what the OS does. Unless they’re someone who is already extremely sensitive over privacy of their data, you’re not going to convice the average Windows user to switch to Linux.

When I was younger I used to use Ubuntu as my main OS for years, tried Arch for a bit - then went back to Windows. I haven’t got the time or energy to be fucking about with things like that anymore.

Windows is for people who’s life or personality doesn’t reolve around their computer. It’s just a tool to get things done and that’s it.

I suspect most BMW owners won’t care too much. Like they’ll find it annoying but still buy/lease the car anyway.

I get it through from the banks perspective. The OS is no longer getting security updates, so this is a fault of the phone manufacter for not having a long term commitment to security and OS updates.

And the app itself required a code that I could only get by SMS.

Yeah this is pretty bad.

And I will be stuck with them for decades.

Why’s that? I have my mortage through one bank but literally never use the actual services of the bank, I’ve never called them or used their app or logged into the site. My current account and savings accounts are with another bank separate to my mortage provider.

Also, won’t you be able to change when you come to re-mortgage if another bank offers a better deal?

Our instance is federated with hexbear, lemmygrad etc. I want to be resonsible for what I see and block, I’m really not a fan of defederation unless it’s a last resort (i.e. CSAM or other illegal content).

I did end up blocking the lemmy.ml instance though, fuck that place. I haven’t even blocked hexbear or lemmygrad.

The problem is most likely people that are new to the fediverse/lemmy just not understanding it and choosing a “default”, popular instance. I was going to pick it as a safe option when I first came here but it was under load and wasn’t accepting new users, where I then had to find another instance and settled on feddit.uk.

It would be good if lemmy instances could have the option of “load balancing” new users, so if the current instance has way more active users than it’s federated wtih then it disables registration but recommends other, smaller instances to the user.

My 1st & 2nd gen Chromecasts are working just as good as was the day we bought them and the UX is exactly the same - what was it about the UX that went down hill?

Probably because it’s a Crowdstrike issue, they’ve pushed a bad update.

I don’t think you can correlate the number of readers to the number of book instances or whatever they’re called. Most people (myself included) probably just use Goodreads, and BookWyrm is probably a good enough alternative that there’s no need to spin up another.

People get really weird about this, they act like you MUST cycle and train it everywhere and anything is just an excuse.

I’ve been watching a lot of car reviews lately and yeah, I think you’re right on all points. I watched a review of the new BMW 7 series and even the air control vents are capacitive sensors refer than little levers and it just seems unnecessary. What was hilarious was that the door release is right by the air vent control, so the review I watched saw the reviewer accidentally open the door when they were trying to control the air vent.

There’s way way way too much reliance on touch screens in cars. I’m not even sure if you’d legally be allowed to use them in some countries, I feel like you’d have to pull over to just change the HVAC settings! You’d swear it was designed by someone that’s never driven a car. They’re decisions that are probably coming right from the top and the actual interior designers are pulling their hair out.

There’s also a common theme across manufacturers where settings for features are lost when the car is switched off. So you have to go into the settings and change them back every single time you get into the car.

If I were in the market for a car (specifically electric), I’d probably go for Kia. The ev6 and ev9 look really nice. I’ve seen a couple of EV9s on the road recently and I was surprised at how much smaller they actually seem than on videos.

Like you though we’re going to keep our car (Nissan Quashqai) as long as possible. There’s no bullshit and it’s practical and comfortable.

On a slightly unrelated note, the Mercedes EQ class are really ugly, both internally and externally.

The human does it out of self preservation, but the car doesn’t need to feel too preserve itself.

By getting the in the car, the passengers should be aware of the risks and that if there is an accident, the car will protect pedestrians over the occupants. The pedestrians had no choice but the passengers have a choice of not getting in the vehicle.

I feel like car manufacturers are going to favour protecting the passengers as a safety feature, and then governments will eventually legislate it to go the other way after a series of high profile deaths of child pedestrians.

I agree it’s terrible on mobile, but it’s the wall of text I love on desktop. I want to see as many titles on a subreddit as I can.

The Lemmy web desktop UI is quite similar. I just wish the list of subscribed communities was more accessible rather than being at the bottom of the instance home page.
