Would love to see the military force MS to contribute to WINE development until all govt apps work on Linux.

Problem is, there’s a lot of really specialized, critical software, that is provided by vendors and throws an absolute fit with any change. You could maybe run Windows in a VM, but it may not work with the specialized hardware and networking gear being used, and now you’re spending a bunch of extra time and money setting up a vm if windows inside Linux, which means you also have to train everyone on how to use the VM, adds another management/security issue, and adds another point of failure.
If they ever switch (the entire govt should, it would be so awesome to see the govt resources put into Linux development instead of M$ pockets) it’d have to be a very gradual process, and windows would still be around decades from now for legacy systems. (If the US hasn’t imploded in civil war or the planet melted by then 🫠)
This isn’t about making iPhone users care per se, I really think it’s just a public perception thing.
Twitter was absolutely special when it came out. It was the first (or at the very least first successful) social media designed for mobile use. It also had large effects on how people thought about and used social media, and had big impacts on the ways various companies and people interact on social media.
I’ve never particularly cared about twitter personally, I used it a handful of times here and there, and I agree that currently and for a while it’s been a pretty shit slice of social media. But saying it was never special is a stretch at best.
I removed copilot the instant I saw it. I don’t need any more Microsoft online shit built into my OS, thanks. (I also use Arch, but Windows kernel anti-cheat)
Imagining the Mozilla AI as a personified Firefox and Thunderbird fighting off Cortana, some BARD (sorry) and a bunch of generic evil corporate AIs just makes me excited that Mozilla would be the one fending everyone off.
What’s the best way to export everything? The name of the theme I used is in the info panel there but if there’s a way for me to export everything as I have it set I’m happy to help.
Otherwise I can get all the names of the different themes for ya.
No I mean things like settings applets/notification tray/widget functionality being better integrated into the overall desktop environment.
And customizing just results in less “jank” than Gnome. IDK how else to describe it, but it just feels like a DE that was actually designed with functionality over looks. Not to say I think it looks bad, but there’s definitely less emphasis on “looking nice” over having the most robust experience, which I appreciate.
I do also like the broad strokes similarities to Windows just because things are where I expect a little more, but not really what I meant by mature, if that makes any sense.
Yeah, just feels much more mature/functional, it’s really nice.
As a long-time Windows user, things like settings or notifications are laid out much more logically, as well as I feel like everything in KDE is just a little better integrated than Gnome. Also a lot faster for me to get it to a point where I feel like I like it, and it seems to use a lot less system resources (although it’s been a couple years since I daily’d linux, so it’s possible that’s different on Gnome these days).
But otherwise I don’t have a whole lot of specifics, it just feels a lot more mature in general, like I don’t have to search for anything I need DE-wise, it’s always right where I’d expect and extremely well-built. And any extra functionality from add-ins works nicely.
Anyone know of a way to “mate” widgets to the taskbar on KDE? So that when I hit the super button I get my widgets popping over any active apps…
I searched for a while and couldn’t find anything, but if anyone got any special sauce I’d love to know.
Edit: just noticed the extra start menu on the right side - lol that’s where that went
I think that we as humans put ourselves above all other animals a lot. But as animals with a higher level of awareness, I feel that we have a responsibility to treat all other animals with respect.
If someone thinks it’s justified to experiment on animals, I see it as their moral obligation to do everything in their power to minimize the suffering that animal will experience.
Also, if this technology could potentially help with handicaps (big X to doubt moment tbh) I absolutely do not want Elon fucking Musk to be the one who owns the technology, so I hope they hit his company with the book.
One thing I do when adding ppl to my plex is just tell them I’m going to setup their account and hand it over for them to change the password.
Open incognito window, create plex account with their email, paste invite link from my account into the incognito window, fix their account settings, then hand it over.
Obviously a bit of a clumsy solution compared to jellyfin, but maybe that can help.
Yup, this is a stop gap to give them time to figure out how much they can still get away with.
Also wouldn’t be surprised to find out X is a problematic name to use when programming a social media website.
And I’m sure they just get an exception.
Yup. I’ve been using linux off and on since middle school - just installed Arch on my laptop because I felt like tinkering and such, but I’ve tried dozens of distros over the years, even fully switching for months at a time, and for a daily driver Windows is still unbeatable for me - sometimes I do feel like messing with my computer, but not all the time.
I rarely have to tinker with Windows more than a bit to get it doing what I want.
However, I do wanna get to the point where I’m as comfortable/knowledgeable with Linux as I am with Windows, but it’s definitely a wildly different beast.
I’m so hell-bent on customizing everything that I refuse to use anything other than custom Arch and end up hating myself for it.
