One of the problems with the fediverse is that each server keeps its own copy of the content. It is definitely a worry that bad actors push content to federated servers to get them taken down due to the content they now are storing.

I really appreciate the links! So it looks like matrix has mainly been focused on the chat room side of things and another downside is that you need some sort of translation layer to connect a matrix thing to an activity pub thing. Definitely gives a lot to think about. I’ve been trying to decide where I should donate my time to doing dev work at but the answer appears to be “it’s complicated”

It’s hard to make anything “official” on the fediverse as things are distributed. Who makes the “official” determination for Lemmy? The biggest instances? The devs? Do we hold a vote across instances?

Do you know of any forum-like websites that use the matrix protocol?

I already pay for YouTube premium but that doesn’t change how creators make content. The YouTube algorithm and its mystery has really changed how people make content over the years. There have been people I’ve watched for 10+ years now and it’s sucks to see them have to chase the algorithm to maintain their livelihood. If I could pay a creator directly to get more content, I gladly would

At this point I’m down with paying a monthly subscription to a creator for content. I’ve never signed up for any creator’s pattern or anything because how the system is currently set up. I know some creators switched to posting less frequently because their more frequent posting appeared to be hurting their view count due to YouTube’s algorithm. I am so willing to pay a creator directly for them to go back to making more frequent content (and content they actually enjoy and not stuff just for views)

I think the idea of having crossposted content is ok since you can opt in or out of seeing it, just looked through the instance though and it seems like nobody is interacting with the content at all. For me, my favorite part of the posts on Reddit was reading through the conversations in the comments. Imo, if nobody is interacting with the content that is being crossposted we shouldn’t bother with continuing to copy it over

I manually curate a news magazine and then I have several dedicated news outlet magazines that get automatically populated with content so people can subscribe to what news sources they want to get mixed into their subscriptions.

We just have to keep making communities and content here that doesn’t revolve around Reddit. I spun up a kbin instance and have been posting news articles I find interesting on my News magazine. Those are manually curated links that I go out and find. I also set up a bot to pull news articles and automatically post them to a different dedicated community on my instance.

Part of the issue with the fediverse is content discovery. You don’t know what you don’t know. Part of the issue is, to subscribe to content from another server you have to search the url or community slug for your instance to find it, pull it, and all you to subscribe to it. It’s slightly less of an issue on the “main” instances because some of the power users are likely going out and searching for new content to subscribe to from other servers.

Are you supposed to go to other instances to make promotion posts about your content on your server? Idk that feels bad and people generally don’t jive with self-promo/ads (maybe it’s more similar to when people would comment stuff like, “oh this belongs in r/ELI5 instead”)

Anyways just sharing some of my morning rambles. I have seen people recreating subreddits on kbin and Lemmy, which is a way to bring new users in to familiar content but it’ll be nice to see some original content and communities also form.

I’ve been a lurker on Reddit for the last decade so contributing here has definitely been a learning experience. One issue I’m running into is, how does one easily share what they are contributing with everybody else? Discoverability is somewhat of an issue on here whether you are trying to make a new community or a new instance.

It’s no different than me sending an email to someone and then sending a request to delete it. There likely is still a copy on the email provider’s server and the recipient could have potentially backed up their emails to something outside of the email ecosystem.

Unfortunately the only way to be absolutely sure that there isn’t information you don’t want on the internet is to not share it at all. There will always be an issue of making sure every system actually deletes content when you request it. Like I said, that doesn’t stop anyone from backing up the data to another system. (E.g. Reddit archives from 2005 to now are available to download, even content that has already been deleted)

I’ve personally messed around with ElevenLabs and their voice generation, and I was honestly amazed. I even did an experiment by running a fully AI YouTube channel for a couple weeks. I wouldn’t be surprised if a massive company like Facebook was able to pull off a realistic sounding voice.

So the first link would give you an RSS feed of my news magazine, the second link would give you an rss feed of any post from my instance that had bbc.com linked as the main post article, and the third link is an rss feed of all the stuff I post as a user.

Obviously it doesn’t have to be my instance you use either, you can also do https://kbin.social/rss?magazine=news for other instances as well! I’m not sure if lemmy has rss support though. It’s kind of a cool “hidden feature” that you can use to curate a RSS feed off of already curated content.

Also as a follow up @amitten, turns out you can take a kbin magazine and turn it into a RSS feed. So technically you can subscribe to my news magazine from my instance with this: https://fediverse.boo/rss?magazine=news

I’ve been posting articles that I find interesting that I think other people might enjoy over on my instance at @news I try to stay away from political posting because subreddits quickly became echo chambers with politics and I don’t want to deal with that lol.

I say come on over and check out the stuff I’m posting, if you find it interesting… I believe most of the sources I am posting have RSS feeds you can subscribe to.

Have any recommendations how to locate one near me? I’ve never heard of something like that before
