  • I understand this but at the same time…assigning a “worth” to posts and comments is helpful when it comes to finding useful information. If I am looking to solve a specific issue on an HP Xx.bb.x laptop or how to overcome tennis elbow…there might be 10 Reddit threads asking the same question. 9 of them have a few comments and zero useful information. One comment has a complete fix and is even referred to as the correct answer on other posts.

In a time when Google delivers pages of useless results…designating a post or comment as the “best” is valuable. Highly upvoted comments and posts typically hold good information, or a funny story or something people agree with.

Is it possible for us to have the benefits of voting without the nonsense that comes with it?

  • If I had been given the option to pay $3 or $5 a month in June to continue using Apollo to access Reddit with no restrictions (NSFW) I would have considered it. I trust Christian’s assessment that it wasn’t financially viable, though. The dev of this app admits at $3 they basically make nothing. If the app cannot be funded (aka dev make a living) Reddit is overcharging for what they provide and can go fuck themselves.

This basically still supports what Christian said in June…and still shows why Reddit was so stupid and toxic that they wouldn’t try to tweak the api dollar amounts to make it sustainable.

Fuck spez still. I admire what these devs are trying to do but Reddit does not want them to succeed, and Reddit does not want people using their apps…so it’s a losing battle

YouTube is so horrible now I hope it’s reaching the tipping point where even non tech people may get sick of it and look elsewhere. There is no reason to have ONE giant main fucking video site and that’s it for most of the English speaking world. I need to look up how to do grout…or open this smoke detector…or beat this video game…no reason that all these videos cannot be hosted via other websites or just self hosted with the affordability of bandwidth. I’ve loved most of what google has done for a long time and they won the browser wars, crushed Mapquest, destroyed hotmail and yahoo mail…now everything is turning to shit. Google search all but refuses to find what you’re searching for. 15 second video…30 second ad. No.

I don’t know if federation is the answer but YouTube being ubiquitous for internet video has got to go.

  • I have a few feelings about it. First, I’m an average middle-aged middle-class straight white cisgendered male and the TikTok algorithm feeds me tons of stuff that is very pro feminism, pro trans rights, anti racist, pro labor. In a very touching and uplifting way a lot of times, actually. I’m a boring person but VERY passionate about these socially liberal issues and it gives me what I want and need to feel like a force of good, keep up with social issues, stay involved in some way feel passionate. My TikTok feed is woke as shit and good for me. I simply don’t see this on Facebook, YouTube and all the rest. I don’t see it. Of course everyone’s algorithm is different…

So maybe TikTok uses my attention for evil…data harvesting, influencing, hacking…I don’t know. I don’t trust china any more or less than most people. But how much do we trust meta, Google, Apple, Microsoft etc? I don’t particularly.

I may just be naive…but I do see a lot of good things that TikTok does, as dumb as it sounds.

  • Dropping a link with no context is the very definition of “low effort” and those should be removed or downvoted. Here’s an article, here’s a video…ok…why do I care? Why is it relevant? What’s good about it?

If you sent the link to your friend in a text, what would you tell them? What makes it worth sharing?

I really wish this was thought about universally. Half of the stuff in the big “news” and “technology” communities seems like it’s just posted mindlessly with no context. It completely missed the point of having a community where you share content…not just post content.

Appreciation for all of the moderators and users making Lemmy great ❤️
