I’ve said it it before: it was a command to the users. “Don’t be evil (because we see everything you do)”.
I ran from Reddit, it be like that

That I would not know, tbh I never heard of anything like that.

Can’t put all eggs in one basket eh?
Indeed, his rhetoric gave the people back their pride, he gave them infrastructure and a job and helped Germany from the ruins of WW1 back on its feet. All for a massive war effort (and much, much worse), as it turned out.
Orange Mussolini is just an awful grifter, in it for himself indeed.
Of course there wasn’t. Calling it like that was a marketing ploy to pull in leftist workers (see eg https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazi_Party). Fun part is that this trick still works, given how often it is used as evidence that “left-leaning people are the real nazis”.
I too have been in the industry for many a decade and I heartily concur. I do have many colleagues though that also have been in for many years, and those are still dedicated believers. Maybe their critical thinking has been eaten away by all the lead in soldering tin?
That is true, and running locally is better in that respect. My point was more that privacy was hardly ever an issue until suddenly now.
It is effing hilarious. First, OpenAI & friends steal creative works to “train” their LLMs. Then they are insanely hyped for what amounts to glorified statistics, get “valued” at insane amounts while burning money faster than a Californian forest fire. Then, a competitor appears that has the same evil energy but slightly better statistics… bam. A trillion of “value” just evaporates as if it never existed.
And then suddenly people are complaining that DeepSuck is “not privacy friendly” and stealing from OpenAI. Hahaha. Fuck this timeline.
That you’ve never heard of it does not mean it doesn’t exist. You - or anyone else - just never heard of it.
Run an adblocker. Seriously, ads are nothing but other websites in the same browser - exactly the kind of thing that is the basis of this problem.
Ah ok, yeah the “beyond” thing us likely pulled straight out of the book I mentioned in my edit.
Artificial General Intelligence, the pipedream of a technological intelligence that is not producing a single thing but generally capable, like a human.
Edit: recommended reading is “Life 3.0”. While I think it is overly positive about AI, it gives a good overview of AI industry and innovation, and the ideas behind it. You will have to swallow a massive chunk of Musk-fanboism, although to be fair it predates Musk’s waving the fasces.
I am convinced that everyone really has to make this work one way or another because so goddamn much money was - and still is - being spent on this garbage.
I actually hear people of other corners of the internet talking about the fediverse, natives to the lands of Meta fed up (not a pun) with the sudden open nazification and looking for alternatives. Mostly Mastodon and Pixelfed, but the experience signing up is seen as complex, confusing and unpleasant, though the general idea is applauded.
I just gave upvote 88 and now I’m sad.

By Kashmir Hill, always well written articles.
My whole life with computers the fanbois du jour told me we had reached excellent usability. We’re talking GEOS, FVWM, the shit Sun and Digital Equipment Corp threw at us, up until Windows 10 and KDE or what have you: there will always come a point when you need or want to have a look under the hood. And there things can be alien, overly complex and very inconsistent and undocumented. That is the path every real user will walk one day, and it’s not pretty. Best of luck on your journeys!
