Can someone update me on the lore around this guy?
Powermod of over 1000 subs. Permanently online. Bans users for no reason and posts inflammatory comments and pins them in threads. One example - Do you remember the r/Art drama where the artist got her art removed by a mod who said it was AI art (it was not) and berated the artist for her style? Yep, that’s awkwardtheturtle.
Basically the worst of the WORST of reddit mods with no life outside of reddit.Wow. So he’s basically the final boss of reddit mods.
No, no ur thinking of spez, they were more like one of the upper teir goonies
Im glad their gone!
Oh that’s interesting AF. I haven’t REALLY been active on reddit for many years up until the recent drama, but even that shitstorm got my attention. Hadn’t realized it was that guy.
Big asshole mod, known for being an asshole. Power tripper af
Further digging reveals the opposite. Not a guy according to the change.org petition, which is a little too doxxy for my taste.
That info from the petition saying awkwardtheturtle is another user is something that went around for a while, but it wasn’t true (unless there’s been a turn in that story).
awkwardtheturtle posted a selfie in the “centuryclub” subreddit (which only allowed people with over 100k link or comment karma in), and the person in the selfie definitely wasn’t the person people suspected awkwardtheturtle was.
The “proof” so many pointed to (including the petition) was a Vox article which was just repeating stuff from a Daily Beast article. The Daily Beast article never said the two were the same person, but the Vox article assumed they were. Probably because the head mod on a lot of subreddits that other person mods is/was awkwardtheturtle.
Okay yeah I thought I remembered her being a woman but somehow everyone here is talking about ‘him’
By default, everyone’s a guy on the internet unless stated otherwise. Some people just know the name and that they’re a powermod and not much else. Also, they’re apparently trans or claims to be, so there’s a subset of people who’d misgender them on purpose.
“The Internet: Where the men are men, the women are men, and the children are FBI Agents.”
“My accounts WILL be restored”
Okay Karen.
I want to speak with Spez’s manager!
I love how the majority of comments in this thread have a single downvote. I wonder who’s doing that 😂
Unlike Reddit, you can see who “reduces” (downvotes) comments and threads. In a comment click on more -> activity -> reduces. Yes, it is all the same person.
Seems like we found turtle’s ball licker’s Kbin account!
What?!? That’s a fucking amazing feature, thanks for spreading the word.
Oh man, that’s amazing. Thank you for that information
I’m loving (Lemmy) kbin more and more with all these accountability features. Thanks for the education!
Edit: I apologize for the confusion. I realized the error a few mins after posting this. The fediverse is still confusing me a bit.
Edit2: I don’t see any strike through text formatting. Maybe in the next update?
Regarding strike through text formatting, it’s markdown, so you just type two tildes on each side of the text to strike through like this:
~~[insert text]~~
, and you get[insert text].Here’s CommonMark’s quick reference for some other basics: https://commonmark.org/help/
That only works on kbin tho, many from lemmy also participate here.
Which, and I’ve said this before, is awesome. The Fediverse is wild.
Posted on Jerboa for Lemmy :)
Not sure I like that feature…
Accountability?
Anonymous voting incentivizes participation.
But is it the kind of participation you want?
Yes, I want people’s honest opinions. Not just the opinions they are comfortable share publicly.
I don’t see “activity”. Weird.
It looks like a kbin feature, not sure it exposes Lemmy activity
federation strikes again! growing pains for sure
It’s under “more”
Hmm, I don’t see it either. Expanding “more” on a reply gives me:
Up, Down, Reply, PM, Report, Block, Fav, View Source.
Maybe we’re missing something obvious? XD
TY in advance if we are :)
ahhh are you on lemmy? this is a kbin thing
Oh, true?! Much to learn, I still have.
Thank you stranger :)
tbh I didn’t realize until this thread! So we both learned :)
I am not seeing anything? Even on posts that have downvotes.
ah, seems kbin-only
Well since this isn’t reddit you can actually look at who is downvoting. So whats up with all the downvotes @amnesiac7 ?
Ah interesting, seems he immediately downvoted you too!
I just boosted everyone in the thread. No ones rep was harmed in the making of this comment section.
OH I didn’t realize that the first tab was “boosts” and erroneously thought YOU were the downvoter, I’m glad I saw this comment.
What does boosting do?
That account has been busy, too. 1 week old and has created 99 threads, mostly political rage bait.

I do like it. Means someone’s answerable for their downvote instead of being able to be an anonymous troll.
I agree. Make people think twice about downvoting. It might help keep it from being used as an “I disagree” button.

We have anonymous voting in politics. People tend to think it is a good policy. Why do you think it is different online?
If you keep your account anonymous and don’t dox yourself, there’s not much to worry about. I’m not scared of a few internet losers trying to dig up info on somebody insignificant and unimportant like me.
It’s being discussed currently and I’m sure it will go away.
It can’t easily be removed since it needs to send out that information into the federated network. At best the function to quickly see that can be removed from the GUI.
I suppose the instance originating the content could receive votes and only report anonymous totals to other instances, but any instance that your votes pass through can still see them.
Imagine the problems that it will cause if bots are used to map who downvoted you.
Lmao deleted his account
This place is feeling more and more like Reddit every day lol
Not sure if that’s a good or bad thing, so I’ll just say it’s a ‘thing’.
How can you tell
Ooh, is his ghost in the room with us right now?
Good luck becoming mod of 1000 communities/magazines in the Fediverse, with them distributed across all sorts of different instances like this.
lmao the sheer amount of entitlement on him. Truly a leopardsatemyface moment. Imagine tying your entire identity to being an unpaid lacky for a website that doesn’t give two fucks about you, to the point that when you’re let go you go nuclear.
It always does make you wonder how these people have the time to actively moderate 100+ subreddits without any compensation. That is, unless there are some under-the-table deals that we don’t know about. I think moderators have been caught taking bribes before.
A petition to ban her was created, with implications made that she was being paid. Mind you, this was quite a few years ago.
Why are you emphasizing pronouns when @euphoricpenguin22 didn’t use any gendered language?
I thought the most remarkable thing was the “moderator” proclaiming their innocence by stating they hadn’t been to the sub in question for at least six months and never talk to the top mod.
Turtle doesn’t mod for shit, nor do other mods with 1000+ subs. These people see themselves as ‘community leaders’ who set up org charts and make all the lower-rung mods do all the work for them. It’s incredibly toxic.
A few days later…
As long as Mr. Snrub has to rebuild his empire from scratch, it’s still a win.
Touch an entire football field of grass, dude.
I think he thinks being a moderator is an important job or something.
ok why do we care about some other site’s drama :3
Because you’re literally browsing a magazine about that other site?
I agree that this particular mod getting banned isn’t directly related to the migration efforts, but the overarching drama it’s connected to is the main reason people are leaving Reddit for Lemmy. IE: admins becoming hostile towards moderators, developers, and redditors, resulting in an environment that the whole userbase is trying to flee. So even though I don’t care about this “power-tripping asshole mod” (as another Lemming described him), I get how some people here might find the post useful and relevant.
Apparently awkward was responsible for a lot of the John Oliver spam in the subs he modded. Might be why he’s finally gone now. He even contacted John Oliver on Twitter to cry about his suspension and ask for help lol See pic related
Of course they’re claiming responsibility for the John Oliver thing. Considering their history, I doubt it. But even if they were involved, it’s the community at large that was responsible for the John Oliverification of Reddit.
Lmao what a goober
lolol what a fucking embarassing tirade. Turtle bitch needs to log off and go wash his ass.
because drama makes the world go around
Turtle has always been a douche canoe. It’s fun to see them melt down.
They sound very unpleasant
Yeah, I don’t understand how they became a moderator on so many major subreddits.
Especially if they’re going to 6 monrhs without helping. Like why?
Reddit is gonna die in a hot fire and we are all here for this!
🙌
That’s actually pretty funny
Lmao finally
Bruh momentum
This made my day. Happy Friday all!
